To: Business Communications Class
From: Tyrel Mortensen
Subject: Project Proposal
Overview
To create a business proposal for a new marketing-type company that specializes in generating positive word of mouth for companies. This will provide you and the class a unique and interesting project that will allow you to use skills we have already learned, as well as skills you will be learning.
Research Question
What kinds of communications are required to generate positive word of mouth from customers?
What are the most affective?
Rationale
By learning the answer to these questions you will be able to understand the kinds of communications needed by every business to succeed with their customers. The class will benefit from this understanding, as well as further develop their skills in these areas.
Feasibility
A couple documents that I have found useful in my research so far, and will be a good starting point for the group are:
Word-of-Mouth Research: Principles and Applications by Jim Hoskins
This article provides some great information about word of mouth advertising. This article has in depth research and evaluates the research in a well-presented manner. The article also provides some basics to understanding the big ideas in word of mouth advertising. Also, the author provides some insight into solving business issues with research and analysis.
Word of mouth: understanding and managing referral marketing by
FRANCIS A. BUTTLE
This article also provides a lot of research and has a lot of graphs and charts to help visualize the messages. This article gives a good deal of information about using social networking sites to help spread word of mouth advertising.
Materials and Methods
Research on the topic will be done in a variety of ways. Primary research will be done through the use of surveys and interviews. Surveys will include questions that provide answers as to ‘what makes you want to continue to do business with any company?’ Questions will also answer ‘what are the factors that would cause you to tell your friends and family about the company?’
Secondary research will be done through the use of articles, books, internet sites, and studies that have already been conducted on the subject. Through the use of secondary research we can gain insight as to what has worked for other companies, as well as what has been proven to be successful based on research.
Personnel
The research should be divided up 50-50 through the team. Half the team members will be assigned to conduct the primary research. The other half will be responsible for the secondary research. This will provide us with an equal balance. The team members doing primary research can be divided into two groups, those surveying current business owners, and those surveying current business students. The group doing primary research will also be broken into smaller groups based on specific areas of interest.
Time Frame
All projects will be completed at least one class session before they are do, so the group can go over the materials and provide feedback, both positive and negative. Time frames will be updated as more information is provided.
Hurdles
Potential issues that may arise from this project could stem from the fact that there is no specific target. This could cause problems if we encounter a poor survey group, or an information overload due to too many options. These can be overcome by making sure that we handle any possible problems early, and make sure we stay ahead of deadlines. This will allow us to alter, or do more research to find the necessary results.
